Implant-Supported Prosthesis

The fixed full-arch prosthesis is screwed onto the implants and removed only by the dentist, at an appointment. The overdenture is held by attachments and the patient removes it for cleaning. The fixed prosthesis usually requires more implants and more bone volume; the overdenture makes daily cleaning easier. The indication depends on the available bone, hygiene and each patient's routine.

The most common options are zirconia and ceramic on a metal or zirconia framework. The choice takes into account the area of the mouth, chewing force, the expected aesthetics and the space available between the teeth. Front and back teeth do not always call for the same material, and this is discussed during planning.

Durability varies with the material, the occlusion, hygiene and habits such as bruxism. Components can loosen, wear or fracture with use, and periodic review exists to detect this early. It is not possible to predict a fixed lifespan before assessing the case; regular follow-up is what allows timely intervention.

Hygiene is different from that of natural teeth. Besides brushing, the contact area between the prosthesis and the gum must be cleaned with interdental brushes, special floss or a water flosser, depending on the design of the work. The instructions are individual and demonstrated at the fitting, and professional maintenance complements care at home.
