CBCT Scan and Digital Planning

A panoramic X-ray is a two-dimensional image, useful for an overview, but it does not show the thickness of the bone or the real distance to nerves and maxillary sinuses. A cone-beam CT scan reconstructs the area in three dimensions and allows the bone to be measured in millimeters, which is essential for planning the position of an implant safely.

A cone-beam CT scan uses a considerably lower dose than a conventional medical CT scan, and the field of view is limited to the area of interest to reduce it further. The exam takes a few minutes and requires no preparation. Like any exposure to radiation, it is indicated only when the information obtained changes the course of treatment — which is the case for every implant plan.

Generally, yes, as long as it is recent, covers the area to be treated and is in digital format (DICOM). Older scans may not reflect the current condition of the bone, especially after extractions or infections, in which case a new scan is requested. Bring the exam to the first visit so it can be assessed.

It is implant surgery performed with a guide 3D-printed from the digital plan made on the CBCT scan. The guide fits in the mouth and directs the drill to the planned position, angle and depth, which makes the procedure more predictable and, in many cases, less invasive. Not every case needs a guide; the indication is defined during planning.
